In John 15:12-17, Jesus commands His disciples to “love one another as I have loved you.” This is not merely a suggestion but a command, urging us to love in the same sacrificial way that He did. Jesus’ love was a love that endured pain, betrayal, and suffering. He loved us even when it led Him to the cross, bearing the weight of unjust accusations and the lies of those who sought to destroy His reputation.
To love as Jesus commands means to love till it hurts. It’s a call to endure the pain of loving others even when they wrong us, lie about us, or try to tarnish our good name. It’s easy to love when it’s reciprocated, but the truetest of love is when it requires sacrifice, when it demands that we bear the weight of unjust suffering and still choose to love.
This kind of love isn’t about personal gain or recognition; it’s about reflecting the heart of Christ. When we love others through their failings, their falsehoods, and their attempts to harm us, we mirror the unconditional love that Jesus showed on the cross. This love is transformative, not just for others but for us as well. It stretches our hearts, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to God’s own love.
Jesus didn’t just command us to love; He showed us how. To love till it hurts is to follow His command fully, loving others deeply, even when it costs us our comfort, our pride, or our reputation. In doing so, we live out the true essence of the Gospel and fulfill Christ’s call to love as He has loved us.
