Do they Need my Help?

In Luke 1:39-56, we witness Mary’s selfless journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was in need. Despite her own miraculous pregnancy, Mary immediately sets out to be with Elizabeth, staying with her for three months to offer support and companionship. This act of kindness reflects the essence of being “avaka,” or available, to those who need us.

Mary’s example teaches us that true service involves being present for others, even when we have our own challenges. Her willingness to travel a great distance and spend months away from home shows that love and compassion often require sacrifice.

In our own lives, being avaka means making ourselves available to those who are struggling, offering not just material help but also emotional and spiritual support. It calls us to be attentive to the needs of others, to listen, to comfort, and to walk alongside them in their journey, just as Mary did with Elizabeth. By being avaka, we mirror Mary’s generosity and open our hearts to the transformative power of service.
