In the Gospel of Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14, Jesus presents a meaningful lesson on the nature of true greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven. When the disciples ask, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus responds by calling a little child to Himself and declares, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
This simple yet powerful statement invites us to reflect on the qualities of a child that Jesus esteems – humility, obedience, and innocence. A child does not seek status or power but trusts and depends wholly on the care of their parents. Similarly, we are called to approach God with a heart that is humble, ready to listen and learn, and willing to submit to His will without reservation.
Humility allows us to recognize our limitations and our need for God’s guidance. Obedience is the expression of our trust in His wisdom, even when we do not fully understand His ways. Innocence keeps our hearts pure, untainted by pride, selfishness, or deceit, enabling us to see the world through the eyes of faith.
In a world that often glorifies self-sufficiency, power, and achievement, Jesus reminds us that true greatness is found in the simplicity of a childlike heart. It is in cultivating these childlike qualities that we become truly pleasing in the sight of God.
So, are you a kid? Do you approach God with the humility, obedience, and innocence of a child? Let us strive to cultivate these virtues in our lives, knowing that in doing so, we draw closer to the heart of God and His Kingdom.
