In Matthew 17:22-27, Jesus demonstrates a thought-provoking lesson about humility and respect for the law. When confronted with the temple tax, though He, as the Son of God, is not obligated to pay it, Jesus chooses to comply with the law. He instructs Peter to catch a fish, and in its mouth, they find the exact amount needed to pay the tax.
This passage teaches us that no one is above the law. Even Jesus, who had every reason to exempt Himself, chose to obey earthly laws, showing us the importance of humility and respect for established norms. By submitting to the law, Jesus models for us the principle that laws, when just, are meant to guide and protect society. It is through our obedience to these laws that we contribute to the common good and reflect a spirit of humility and respect.
