Brokenness and Weakness; The Pre-requisites for Spiritual Growth

The world we live in is changing at a pace that is unthinkably fast. There is no space for the sluggish, light headed and easy-going folks. Nowadays people and persons are judged to be good and potential, if only they possess certain qualities like efficiency, multi-tasking, oration, intelligence, smartness, sociability, etc. All these qualities are undoubtedly essential for an individual to be an agent of transformation in society. Also, all the above-mentioned qualities make a person acceptable in society and in the eyes of the world.

Have you ever given a thought as to what could be the possible qualities that, when having acquired, would make one acceptable in the eyes of the God? Different people would surely come up with different opinions but as for me, the qualities that would make one acceptable in the eyes of God are “Weakness” and “brokenness.” Thus, we need to ask this question, “Am I weak enough for the grace of God to work in me? We need to be weak because sometimes, our own strengths can become obstacles for the grace of God to be shown in our lives. “Am I weak enough for Christ’s power to shine through me?”

God does not look for super human beings. Instead, God looks for weak people through whom His power can shine. God calls and makes use of a person from his lowliness, when he is at his worst. If we have some good qualities or talents, we should not dare to boast, because we were called because of our weaknesses. Those weaknesses made us even more lovable before the Lord. The hidden fact is: where sin abounds and where weakness abounds, grace abounds all the more. Thus, this should enable us to ponder on the following questions: Am I weak enough to rely solely on the grace of God. Am I weak enough to depend solely on the mercy of God?

The second important quality that makes us acceptable in the eyes of God is Brokenness. Am I broken enough to allow the grace of God to shine through me? If we do not carry enough brokenness in our lives, God cannot make us whole. When we do not carry enough brokenness, we make ourselves incapable of having a good participation in the passion and in the dying of the Lord.

We need to be broken people. Life is a process where we are broken, and broken and broken till we get crushed. Finally, when we are crushed, God puts us back so that we can become life givers for others. This breaking can impede our path unheralded. It can come from anybody. However, if we consider this breaking as a sign of blessing, we can become finer and finer and we become effective life givers. But most of all, this breaking can come from the Lord. Let us not run away or shield ourselves from it because the breaking that comes from the Lord can make us more holy. There is no holiness without breaking. There is no holiness without a willingness to be broken.
We also share in the sufferings of Christ when we are broken.

We have all been called by God to live a perfect life. We need not possess the recognitions of the world to become perfect. All that God wants from us is a heart that acknowledges his/her weaknesses and a willingness to be broken so as to be made whole in the future for His greater
glory. I strongly believe that the seeds of holiness will gradually begin to germinate when these two above mentioned requirements are met.

“God does not call us to be successful, but to be faithful.”
